One of the most highly anticipated films of 2018 is The Hate U Give By 20th Century Fox. The film, directed by George Tillman Jr., is an adaptation of the award winning novel by Angie Thomas. The title itself is an ode to Tupac Shakur. If you know your rap history, then you know 2Pac’s Thug Life stands for “The Hate U Give Little Infants F**** Everyone”.
The Hate U Give is about a teenager named Starr who has to constantly switch between two racially different worlds. Starr struggles to maintain balance every day by code switching within her school and home lives. The balance of these two worlds gets toppled when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her best friend by a police officer. Facing the pressures of her community and doing what’s right, Starr must find her voice and be who she truly is within both worlds.
This film will rock your soul to its core. The visuals will hit home like an earthquake shaking your house. You will laugh, cheer, and cry. The Hate U Give taps into every single emotion. I love how they build on the modern family structure and the importance of the presence of both the mom & dad in the household. They also do a great job on the brother & sister dynamic. No matter how tough you think you are, you are guaranteed to shed a tear. This is one of those films where you sit in the theater after the credits are over just to have a deep discussion with the people next to you about it. The Hate U Give is very much Terry McFly Approved. I highly recommend everyone go see this film. If you don’t feel woke, this might be the film that wakes you up. This is a real representation of the world we live in whether you like it or not.
The Hate U Give is in select theaters October 5th, everywhere October 19th.
