Jhene Aiko’s meditative “Chilombo” album is a creative self-discovery with smooth melodies that emphasize the excitement of her lifetime. Chilombo is Aiko’s third studio album that was released March 6th. This album is entitled her last name hinting at the album being about her heart, which is where home is.
Jhené elaborated more on the meaning of “Chilombo” via Instagram Stories. She broke the name down into sections: “[Chi] meaning life force, [l] is for Love. Love is Living on Valued Energy, taking care of the future by being present in this moment, [om] is the sound of the universe, the solution is sound, [b] is for base; basics, beginnings, [o] is eternity, infinite, wholeness… totality, perfection”.
The album features various artists including her father, Dr. Chill, the love of her life and TWENTY88 collaborator, Big Sean, H.E.R., Future, Miguel, Ab-Soul, Nas, John Legend, and Ty-Dolla $ign.
As a young woman in her late 20’s, Aiko experienced death and divorce. Her previous album Trip was more than just an album about being high. She explained, track-by-track her “trip” into nature, becoming one with herself as she measured her mistakes and acknowledged her own strengths, being a brave soul.
Jhene open’s up again taking us on a ride into her introspective sound journey as she speaks on the broken hearts, bones, and break downs she’s experienced all the while putting herself back together relying heavily on meditation, God, and her inner strength. This album also ties back to her using the vice marijuana and meditation to help sedate and heal her throughout her adventure.
Aiko journey’s through the album as she boldly addresses her triggers, defines herself, surrenders, receives her closure and celebrates in happiness. She encourages us to stand firm and feel how we feel with our emotions because better days are coming.
